PERSONAL UMBRELLA INSURANCE

Personal Umbrella Insurance, with the whole picture in view.

A serious liability claim can reach beyond the protection in a home or auto policy. We help New York households review an additional layer of personal liability and understand how it fits with the policies underneath.

The coverage conversation

What it can cover

Extra liability above home and auto

A personal umbrella can provide additional liability coverage above specified underlying home and auto limits for covered claims. The underlying policies and the umbrella must be reviewed together.

Covered injury and property damage claims

An umbrella may respond to covered claims alleging bodily injury or property damage once applicable underlying coverage is exhausted. Triggers, exclusions, and defense provisions vary by policy.

Other personal liability exposures

Some policies address additional types of personal liability, but that does not mean every claim is covered. We explain the actual wording instead of assuming an umbrella fills every gap.

A coordinated household review

We review the people, properties, and vehicles that need to be included, along with any required underlying limits. An umbrella does not replace property coverage for damage to your own home or car.

A policy that fits your life

Who it’s for

Personal umbrella insurance is worth discussing when you want to review liability protection across your household. Driving, hosting guests, owning a home, and having young drivers can bring different exposures. We ask about the way you live rather than choosing coverage from a single detail.

Tell us about additional residences, rental properties, recreational vehicles, and other activities that may need attention. A rental building or business exposure is not automatically covered by a personal umbrella. We can explain when a separate landlord or business liability discussion is needed.

Households in NYC often have different home and auto arrangements, including renters who own cars and co-op owners with vehicles garaged outside the city. We review the named insureds and policy requirements so those arrangements are not overlooked.

How we work

Bring your current home and auto declarations pages, along with any other liability policies. Personal umbrella insurance usually requires certain underlying limits. We check those requirements, identify the policies that need to be scheduled, and discuss the consequences of changes to underlying coverage.

We compare options from multiple carriers and explain the trade-offs in scope, exclusions, and underlying requirements. Availability depends on carrier underwriting and your circumstances. We do not assume that an umbrella offered by one carrier follows another carrier’s wording.

Adam or Peter can review how the coverage fits with the rest of your insurance. We serve you from our Rockaway Park office and are licensed in NY, NJ, and CT. Tell us when drivers, properties, or household activities change. Your policy wording controls coverage.

A little clarity

Your questions, answered.

Insurance shouldn’t leave you guessing. Here are a few things you may want to know.

What is personal umbrella insurance?

It provides an additional layer of personal liability above specified underlying coverage, commonly home and auto policies, for covered claims. It has its own conditions and exclusions and does not automatically cover every gap.

Do I need certain home and auto limits for an umbrella?

Usually, yes. Carriers commonly require certain underlying liability limits and specified policies. We review the actual requirements and how your current coverage fits before you choose an umbrella.

Can renters buy personal umbrella insurance in NYC?

An umbrella may be available to renters, subject to underwriting and underlying policy requirements. Owning a house is not the only reason to review personal liability. Tell us about your renters policy, vehicles, and household activities.

Does a personal umbrella cover my business or rental building?

Not automatically. Business activities and some rental property exposures may be excluded or require separate arrangements. Tell us about both so we can discuss personal, landlord, and business liability without confusing their roles.
